HS Codes explained in short

HS stands for Harmonised System. It is a worldwide terminology for the classification of items. It helps customs in various countries to make sure that they are talking about the same product and the HS code of a product also determines the import duties. Worldwide it is a six-digit code framework for grouping and categories different merchandise and goods being exported. Some countries even specify further with an eight-digit code.

HS codes often determine the import duties on a product. For example, if you want to import electric busses from China into the EU, this goes with HS code 870240, and there is an import duty for everything under this code of 10%.

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule or HTS is linked to the HS codes and specifies the import duties for a specific code in that country. For example, this is the HTS of the United States

There are approximately in circulation 5,300 HS codes that identify export goods that are broken down into headings along with subheadings. They are also arranged into 99 different chapters around with being grouped into 21 sections. The shipping code is broken into the following three different parts:

  1. The first two digits give a rough indication of the product an refer to the various chapters of the list (HS-2).
  2. The following two digits within the code help to further identity the product category (HS-4).
  3. The final two digits within the code are extremely specific to the goods that are exported (HS-6).

The 4-digit HS code for cosmetics is 3304. It is described as ‘Beauty or make-up preparations and preparations for the care of the skin (other than medicaments), including sunscreen or suntan preparations; manicure or pedicure preparations‘. However, mostly the 6-digit codes are used:
330410: Lip make-up preparations
330420: Eye make-up preparations
330499: Others (within this category)

Food supplements like vitamins  fall under four-digit HS code 2936. Vitamins A, B, D etc. have their own sub codes. Most other supplements will fall under HS code 293690, but here check carefully, as the group Organic chemicals (29) is a broad one.

Typically electronics HS codes start with 84 or 85, but this depends on the exact product:

847130: Computers
851714: Mobile telephones
852351: Thumbdrives

Different countries may have different versions of the HS code list, but at least the first 6 digits are fully harmonised. You can find a good website to lookup the code for your product here.

HTS stands for Harmonized Tariff System and the classification of your product with a 6 or 8-digit code determines the import duties you pay.
